Yogo Sapphires
Yogo Sapphires
Many who have heard of Montana sapphires make the assumption that all Montana sapphires are Yogo sapphires. But that isn’t true. Yogo sapphires come from Yogo Gulch, hence the name. Yogos are further distinguished by their exceptionally deep cornflower blue color, a result of trace amounts of iron and titanium, but they can also show violet and violet blue colors, and some even have color changing characteristics. The remarkable clarity of these stones enhances their brilliant blue hue. Yogo sapphires are completely natural-they require no heat treatment. The Yogo mine is one of the rarest sapphire deposits in the world.
“The finest precious gemstones ever found in the United States.”
The beauty and brilliance of Yogo sapphires was recognized as far back as 1895, when an appraiser with Tiffany’s in New York City pronounced they were the finest precious gemstones found in the country.
Montana Sapphires
Montana sapphires come from one of several mines located across the western part of the state. In their rough form (a term for an uncut, unpolished gemstone) these stones predominantly have a blue to bluish green tone but come in all the colors of the rainbow – red, pink, green, violet, yellow and even milky white to reddish purple. The varied colors of rough hint at one of the remarkable traits of Montana sapphires, which is that they naturally occur in many different colors. Most Montana sapphires require heat treatment (95%) to finish what Mother Nature did not – enhancing each stone’s color more significantly.
Always Ethically Sourced
In truth, Montana is the only state in the union with significant production of gem quality sapphires. What makes this even more special is the ability for Montague’s Jewelers to trace each stone from the mine through delivery, ensuring that ethical practices are followed throughout.
